Many Zoxers know I lost my 40 year old son very unexpectedly on 12/13/2018. I was on my way home from work when I received a call from my daughter telling me Jeff was in the ER. I was about 20 minutes out and sped back to town, begging God to take me and spare my son. Once at the hospital we had to wait to see him, tests were being done. The ER doctor was honest with us and told us his bedside neuro exams weren’t good. I knew what that meant. When we finally got to see him, I tried to be strong. I held his hand and asked him to squeeze my hand. No response. His pupils were fixed and dilated, telling me he couldn’t see me. My daughter and Jeff’s dad left the room and my sister and a friend, a surgical nurse at the hospital joined me at Jeff’s bedside. The nurses said he could hear me. I’ve always heard that hearing was the last thing to go. I leaned over and whispered in Jeff’s ear. “Stay strong, Jeff, fight through this, I can help you get through it. I then said, “I love you, I’m so proud of you.” And then I cried. As I stood up I looked at Jeff’s face and he had tears streaming down the sides of his face. The nurses told me that wasn’t normal, they assured me he heard me and knew I was there. My first ZOX was Continue. I choose to continue without my son, however carrying on his legacy of love and kindness.
